Rachmaninoff's last recordings, made in 1939-42, are not the vintage mono RCA gave Horowitz a decade later, but they do not require much imagination from the listener in order to imagine why Rachmaninoff was the idol of many other great but vastly different pianists, such as Bolet and Horowitz for instance, and why Harold Schonberg himself used "Vocalise" is a song by Sergei Rachmaninoff, composed and published in 1915 as the last of his 14 Songs or 14 Romances, Op. 34. Written for high voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, but is sung using only one vowel of the singer's choosing (see also vocalise). "Sergei Rachmaninoff" foi como o próprio compositor gravou o seu nome quando viveu no ocidente, durante a última metade de sua vida. Entretanto, transliterações alternativas de seu nome incluem Sergey ou Sergej, e Rachmaninov, Rachmaninow, Rakhmaninov ou Rakhmaninoff.

Sergey Rachmaninov Few musicians have successfully followed two musical disciplines, but Rachmaninov managed three: composer, conductor and pianist. His music is tonal, classically structured and imbued with harmonic beauty and melodies of overpowering expressiveness – a Romantic writing after the Romantic era had passed.

Sergei Rachmaninov (also spelled Rachmaninoff, 1873–1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninov, it seemed, could do nothing right by most of his contemporary critics' and composers' standards. As a person, the classical music composer appeared somewhat cold and aloof - Stravinsky once called him "a six-and-a-half foot tall scowl".

Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period. The influence of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, and other Russian composers is seen in his early works, later giving way to a personal style notable for song-like melodicism, expressiveness and rich orchestral colours.
