Ambdues galàxies van ser descobertes per John Herschel el 1835. Al novembre de 1999, el Telescopi Espacial Hubble va fotografiar aquestes galàxies i, a l'abril de 2006, el Telescopi Espacial Spitzer també ho va fer.

At this time of year, there are lots of gatherings often decorated with festive lights. When galaxies get together, there is the chance of a spectacular light show as is the case with NGC 2207 and IC 2163. Located about 130 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Canis Major, this pair of spiral galaxies has been caught in a grazing encounter.
Tidal forces from NGC 2207 compressed and elongated the disk of IC 2163, forming an oval ridge of star formation along a caustic where the perturbed gas rebounded after its inward excursion. NGC 2207 and IC 2163 are a pair of colliding spiral galaxies, about 80 million light-years away, in the constellation Canis Major. They are only in the firs NGC 2207 and IC 2163 met and began a sort of gravitational tango about 40 million years ago. The two galaxies are tugging at each other, stimulating new stars to form. Eventually, this cosmic ball will come to an end, when the galaxies meld into one.
NGC 2207 is a pair of colliding spiral galaxies. Their bright nuclei resemble a striking set of eyes. Though individual stars are too far apart to collide, t
